Comically Linguistic: That’s right. The old ‘Eskimo words for snow’ myth. Where did this myth come from? A somewhat misunderstood and over exaggerated article published in 1940 by Benjamin Whorf. In this article, Whorf claimed there were 7 words for snow. Over time reporters exaggerated the number to make things more interesting. Eventually that number rose to 100, which sounds very interesting to a collector of incorrect facts (we all know that guy), but to linguists this is snow joking matter. Get it? Snow joking … yeah.

I like how this one has them in the wild and how you can see them leaping about. Really shows off their vertical clinging and leaping locomotion.

Features of strepsirhines:

Mainly nocturnal

Rely on their sense of smell

No colour vision but can see well in twilight

Asocial

Smaller brains than the haplorhines

Small-medium in size

Move by vertical clinging and leaping

Unfused mandible

Curly noses

Tooth combs

Grooming claws

Features of lemurs:

Found in Madagascar

32 species

Small/medium

Move by vertical clinging and leaping

Variable activity patterns (nocturnal or diurnal)

Females are dominant
